Multiple Sclerosis and My Insurance Career

Im not an insurance man. Although I have auto, health and renters insurance I have no desire to be an insurance man. I remember 27 years ago when I applied to be an insurance man right out of college. I was 22 and rather shy and I turned down a job with a major insurance company because I didnt think I could prospect for new clients. Prospecting in its simplest form is cold calling or telemarketing. If Id been able to do that my life might be a little different today for me financially. But I was young and stupid and thought I knew everything so I didnt become an insurance agent. Ill explain the title of this article in just a second so keep on reading.
After my diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1991 I started slowing down because I thought I was gonna die from multiple sclerosis! Well, I didnt die but I did develop panic and anxiety attacks which I still argue with to this day. Now I know what they are and how to deal with them. I ended up selling my carpet cleaning business in 1993. When a person gets something like MS you dont know whats going to happen. I remember I had a lot of numbness and tingling and every time I got tingling in a different body part I thought for sure that was it. Now it is 16 years later and I know pretty much how my MS is going to go. Anyway, I developed a talent for telemarketing and Ive done it continuously since my diagnosis for one business or another.
Now to the title of this story! Its funny because in 1980 I didnt want to prospect. Now thats all I do is cold calling and telemarketing. In the past year my MS has taken my legs and my walking. That is a common symptom. Now, Im really glad that I can cold call. Being an entrepreneur I started my own business working with insurance agents. Ive now been calling for insurance men since 2004. Id mainly call homes for insurance quotes on auto, life, health and home which I really dont like to do. I like calling businesses. However, for money I will still call on the homes. In 2006 I met an insurance man whom I really get along with. His name is Bob and we share the same warped sense of humor and many laughs. He picks on my MS and I pick on him because hes overweight. Since I met Bob in October of 2006 I've added two other good insurance men that I like to work with. They pay me to set up appointments for them. Ive now started calling businesses for general liability insurance in addition to the auto, home, life and health. I can call during the day which is better for my MS and the insurance men are happy with what Im doing for them. I get social security now so I figure if I can add a little more money from telemarketing then I'm in great shape!
In the summer of 2007 I joined Hometown Quotes as an affiliate. I thought this would compliment my MS and my insurance career. People can go to my website listed in the resource box below and get up to 5 quotes for all their insurance needs. It makes shopping for insurance easier for people and I can make some extra money. Plus, insurance agents can get more business. Its a win-win-win situation. So that is my insurance career in a nutshell.
